JAMES & KUTYLA Architecture is a full service architecture and design

firm located in Chicago since 1984. Its principals are William James and

Leonard Kutyla. Our range of work includes theatres, TV studios and

galleries, office interiors, retail spaces, as well as hotels, ecclesiastical

facilities, multi-unit residential buildings, restaurants, and single-family

residences.  James & Kutyla’s staff prior experience includes design of

several other building types including museums, hospitals, and

educational facilities.

JAMES & KUTYLA Architecture offers complete Architectural Services

including programming, master planning, schematic design, site and

land planning, modeling, presentation and contract documents, as well

as construction contract administration.

Our Interior Design Services include programming, use analysis, as well

as finish, fixture, and furniture design and/or selections.

 

METHODOLOGY

The focus of our design effort is to give each client’s project aunique and

refined solution, based on their project’s specific needs, circumstances,

opportunities, and constraints at the time.  As a result, our portfolio of

work includes a broad span of design “styles” and building “types”, which

yields other benefits, as well. As you can infer from the range of our work

noted above, we feel that the quality of an architectural response to a

client’s needs is related as much to the breadth and depth of our

experience as it is to our commitment and talents.  The opportunity to

cross-pollinate ideas from one building type to another helps to inform

both the design and construction process. (For example, the insights

gained from having designed theaters helps enormously in the design of

other spaces such as restaurant and retail spaces, which also need to

confront issues of entry and egress, accessibility, heating and cooling,

acoustics, sight lines, and lighting.)

Accordingly, our office is structured to allow this experience, commitment,

and talent to be applied to each and every project we are entrusted with. 

While the Principal-in-Charge is responsible for the project’s smooth

progress (and remains intimately involved from beginning to end), the

other Principal is available for periodic reviews and counsel.  A Project

Architect is also assigned to the project to help ensure the thorough and

detailed execution of our design and documentation services.
